in school

The Children’s Ministry Team visits local Primary schools to offer Christian teaching and support for the RE curriculum. Here is a summary of the kinds of work that we do:

“Godly Play” Bible Story Clubs
We run a lunchtime club at at St Alphege Infant School for Year 2.
Children listen to a bible story told using illustrative models and have a time to 'wonder' about the different parts of the story before responding to it in art.
Godly Play groups have been running in the Parish for many years.

Worship in Assemblies
Members of the team regularly lead worship in a number of schools in the Parish:St Alphege Infant and Junior Yew TreeSaint Martins
We have also been visiting speakers and performers for Greswolde and Oak Cottage schools.
When we lead worship for children we try to use a variety of presentation styles to make the bible and the Christian message accessible.

Palm Cross making
For the past few years we have visited the St Alphege schools during Lent to show the children how to make Palm Crosses, using the opportunity to tell them about the events of Palm Sunday and their importance in the Easter Story.

Journey to the Stable and the Easter Journey
In 2006 we ran our first 'journey', inviting over 400 children from local schools to discover what it might have felt like that first Christmas, as we featured a real baby in a manger and a chapel full of straw. In 2007 we added an Easter journey, following the days leading up to Jesus’ crucifixion and resurrection. Enjoyed by children, teachers, parents and all those who took part in recreating the scenes, we have continued to offer this very special experience to school children in our Parish.

Interactive workshops
We support the RE curriculum needs of schools in our Parish by leading interactive workshops either in school or church. These have included baptism workshops for St Alphege Infant and Junior schools and a workshop about weddings for Yew Tree School.
